Somewhere

June 26, 1944

 Dearest Mother, Dad, & Velma;

             Here I am again, not much to write but at least you’ll know I am O.K.  Everything is pretty quiet around here now so we are dive-bombing once again.  I am still flying the Thunderbolt and like it better everyday.  You shouldn’t worry about the dive-bombing because it is fairly safe.  We go too fast to be caught and that is the main thing and if we are caught we can fight our way easily enough.  However, that is our job – looking for fights.

             The food situation is much better now.  I had Grape Nuts this morning the first since I left the States.  Boy, were they good.  Of course, we had condensed milk with them but that stuff is so rare it was even good.

             I have read several articles in magazines that things have really changed in the States.  I wonder if that is really true.  It says that so many of the fellows are dissatisfied with everything at home.  I know things will be changed but I hope they aren’t changed that much!

             Last night we received our free issue of cigarettes, candy, tooth paste, soap, etc.  So you see we are well supplied with the necessities and, too, they are free.  Those articles I mentioned are given to fellows in the combat area.  Uncle Sam certainly looks after his men.

             I am getting along fine and feeling much better up here.  Maybe the atmosphere is better.  It is very hot during the day but the nights are always comfortable.  I even use a wool blanket.

             I hope Dad is still having good business and making money!  That’s what counts.  I will surely be glad to get home some time this summer and I may be able to.  Pray for me!

             Be good and take care of yourself.

                                                                                                 All my love,

                                                                                                 Son

P.S.  Mom, don’t send me envelopes or stamps.  We can get them here.
